The English Channel was a graveyard of ships and planes, but above the clouds, something impossible was happening. Lieutenant Charles "Chuck" Yeager, flying his P-51 Mustang, found himself pursued by a German jet-a sleek, silver craft with no markings. It was faster than anything he had ever seen.

He dove, rolled, tried to evade. But the jet stayed with him, its weapons silent.

"Unknown aircraft, identify yourself," Chuck radioed.

A voice crackled back. "My name is Friedrich. I am from the year 1946. The war has been over for a year in my time. But I've been sent back to stop a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"A friend of yours. He's going to defect after the war and take vital secrets to the Soviets. I'm here to stop him before he can."

Chuck's blood ran cold. He knew who Friedrich meant-a fellow pilot, a man he trusted with his life.

"I can't let you do that," Chuck said. "He's innocent until proven guilty."

Friedrich's jet pulled alongside Chuck's Mustang. "In my time, he's not innocent. He causes decades of harm."

Chuck looked at the German pilot, at the impossible situation, at the future that might never be.

"There has to be another way," Chuck said. "We can convince him to stay. Change his mind without violence."

Friedrich was quiet for a long moment. Then: "You would try?"

"I would."

Friedrich's jet veered away, disappearing into the clouds. Chuck flew on, his mind racing. He would talk to his friend. He would find a way.

The war continued. But somewhere in the future, a new path was opening.

And Chuck Yeager never forgot the German pilot who had trusted him to do the right thing.
